![]() Aug1, 2003 Mission Accomplished? August 1, 2003 sees me back in school and everyone asking, "What is next?" As many times as that has been asked, it still takes my breath away. It is the same feeling I had when someone asked when I was having my next child while being wheeled out of the delivery room with my first. The 652 miles is behind me, but there is still a long way to go. At this time, I cannot say exactly what that means or where it will lead me. But you can be assured, wherever it leads, I will follow. Many times during the six years spent fulfilling my river swim mission statement frustrations would mount and tears would flow, making me seriously question what compelled me to continue. No skies ever opened up to answer me, but a light was always there to lead me on. The Tennessee River continues to be the most awe-inspiring, beautiful river in the world. I will continue to do what I can to keep her that way. We all will. The Old Man and the River has emailed me, so I know he is safe. God Bless. His stories of the river are priceless, and I lucky to get to hear them. The stories are passed from my lips to my children's...as history was passed on before paper and pen. Perhaps they will, in turn, pass them on to their children. Hopefully the Tennessee River will not end up like the Colorado River or the Rio Grande; often dry before they reach their final destination. Please don't shake your head and think it won't happen. My Great-grandfather scoffed at the thought on landing on the moon. He would give an intimidating laugh, shake his college educated head and firmly state, "It will never happen. Never." At the end of my first year of swimming the River, I met a great woman/friend. She always seemed to show up during my swim when I was in most need of help/arnica/advice/spiritual boost. She is another blessing of the river swim and I am thankful. The River sends blessing from all directions...as we care for her, she will care for us. Thanks Pat for caring so deeply about the Tennessee River and my compelling desire to swim through her waters! A bazillion thanks, again, to everyone who has emailed me in support the my swim and the beautiful Tennessee River. You are all incredibly compassionate people-thanks! Write soon, mimi |
