On July 25, 2003, Mimi Hughes achieved her goal of swimming the entire length of the Tennessee River --- a total of 652 miles. A high school teacher and mother of four from Taft, Tennessee, Mimi undertook her five-year pilgrimage, which she dubbed the Tennessee Riverswim, in an effort to raise public awareness about the river's polluted condition.

"Some days I dreaded putting my
face in the water, but even on
the worst days, I was still awestruck
by the river's beauty." --- Mimi
